Art Taylor helped shape the pulse of countless memorable jazz sessions. On A.T.’s Delight, he steps into the leader’s role with a programme that brings his rhythmic imagination and instinct for ensemble playing into focus.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in August 1960, the album features Dave Burns on trumpet, Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Wynton Kelly on piano and Paul Chambers on bass. Carlos “Patato” Valdes adds congas on selected tracks, bringing another layer of colour to Taylor’s crisp, propulsive drumming.
The repertoire is a major part of the attraction. John Coltrane’s Syeeda’s Song Flute opens with a memorable melodic hook, while Thelonious Monk’s Epistrophy gives the group angular phrases and rhythmic puzzles to play with. Move provides a brisk change of pace, and Taylor’s Cookoo and Fungi places the interplay of drums and percussion at the heart of the music.
Why this album deserves a place in your collection
For its combination of strong tunes, distinctive soloists and rhythmic variety. Turrentine’s warm tenor and Kelly’s buoyant piano are pleasures in themselves, but Taylor’s leadership gives the session its character: alert, tightly connected and full of forward motion. A rewarding choice for anyone exploring the musicians who made the Blue Note sound so compelling.
