Out of the Blue is Detroit alto saxophonist Sonny Red’s only album as a leader for Blue Note. Wynton Kelly plays piano on both sessions, with Sam Jones and Roy Brooks on bass and drums in December 1959, and Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb taking over in January 1960.
Start with “Bluesville” for Red’s buoyant blues phrasing and the way Kelly answers him at the piano. Then try “Stay as Sweet as You Are,” where Red takes his time with the melody and lets the ends of his phrases hang in the air. The two tracks make a good introduction to his playing.
Why this album deserves a place in your collection
If you enjoy hearing Wynton Kelly in a small group, follow his accompaniment across the two sessions. With Red as the only horn, there’s room to hear how Kelly responds to the alto, and how the change of bass and drums alters the feel of the quartet.
