Recorded on 27 March 1955, this early Blue Note session puts Hank Mobley’s tenor saxophone out front with Horace Silver on piano, Doug Watkins on bass and Art Blakey on drums. “Hank’s Prank” opens at a brisk pace, but Mobley’s phrases have an easy flow. On the ballad “My Sin,” his warm tone and Silver’s quiet piano solo show another side of the quartet.
“Avila and Tequila” brings a Latin pulse to the set, while “Walkin’ the Fence” is a blues worth hearing for the exchange between Mobley, Silver and Blakey. Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale” is the only standard in a programme of five Mobley originals.
Why this album deserves a place in your collection
If you know Mobley from Soul Station or Workout, this session lets you hear how much of his style was already in place in 1955. The quartet gives his tenor plenty of space, and the six tracks show how comfortably he moves between ballads, blues and faster tempos. The Japanese mini-LP sleeve reproduces the artwork of the original Blue Note 10-inch LP, BLP 5066.
