Recorded on 21 December 1958 and released by Blue Note in 1959, Off to the Races brings Donald Byrd’s trumpet together with Jackie McLean on alto and Pepper Adams on baritone. Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones and Art Taylor give the three horns a supple rhythmic base. The contrast between McLean’s edge and Adams’s weight makes Byrd’s clear tone stand out.

“Lover, Come Back to Me” is a good place to hear the band at full tilt. Then try “When Your Love Has Gone,” where Byrd plays with just the rhythm section. The smaller setting leaves room to hear how he shapes a melody and how lightly Kelly accompanies him.

Why this album deserves a place in your collection

If you enjoy Byrd’s records with Pepper Adams, the addition of McLean gives this session a different balance. Listen to how the three horns sound together, then to how distinctly each player phrases when it’s his turn to solo.
