Recorded on 26 March 1961, Workout pairs Hank Mobley’s tenor saxophone with Grant Green’s guitar and a rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones. On the title track, listen to how Philly Joe fills the gaps in the theme before Mobley settles into his solo. On the brisk blues “Smokin’,” Green’s light touch keeps the music moving without making it feel hurried.

“The Best Things in Life Are Free” is the only standard in a programme of four Mobley originals. The closing “Greasin’ Easy” is a good place to hear how much Mobley can do with a relaxed blues tempo, and how naturally Kelly and Green fit around him.

Why this album deserves a place in your collection

If you enjoy Soul Station, Workout lets you hear Mobley with Kelly and Chambers again, this time with Green’s guitar adding a different voice to the group. This Japanese CD keeps the original five-track programme and reproduces the Blue Note artwork in a mini-LP sleeve.
