The Magnificent Thad Jones, Vol. 3 offers a particularly rewarding view of Thad Jones as a small-group trumpeter and composer. His improvising combines a warm, expressive sound with phrases that take unexpected turns, finding fresh angles on a melody while remaining firmly connected to the swing of the music.

The principal session features a sextet with Benny Powell on trombone, Gigi Gryce on alto saxophone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, George Duvivier on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. The three horns give the ensemble a rich range of colours, and the writing makes good use of their contrasting voices without crowding the soloists.

“Slipped Again,” “Let’s” and “Thadrack” highlight Jones’s compositional imagination, while “Ill Wind” provides a familiar song through which to explore the group’s expressive range. A quartet performance of “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” with Barry Harris, Percy Heath and Max Roach, brings a more intimate setting and another perspective on his lyrical playing.

Why this album deserves a place in your collection

For listeners who know Jones mainly through his later orchestral work, this album brings his individuality as a soloist into focus. It also rewards anyone drawn to the sound of Blue Note’s 1950s small groups: strong writing, distinctive horn voices and rhythm sections that make the music breathe. The contrast between sextet and quartet adds variety to an engaging programme.
