Elder Don presents Don Wilkerson’s tenor saxophone in music that draws naturally on jazz, blues and rhythm and blues. Recorded in 1962, the session has an earthy warmth and a strong sense of movement. Wilkerson’s robust tone is its centre of gravity: expressive, full-bodied and persuasive even in the simplest phrase.
Grant Green’s guitar makes an especially sympathetic companion. His clear lines and rhythmic economy complement Wilkerson’s more expansive delivery, while Johnny Acea’s piano adds colour and drive. Bassist Lloyd Trotman and drummer Willie Bobo keep the pulse buoyant, giving the quintet a relaxed but purposeful swing.
The repertoire ranges from “Lone Star Shuffle” and “Scrappy” to “San Antonio Rose” and “Poor Butterfly.” That variety suits Wilkerson’s ability to combine a direct, blues-rooted approach with melodic sensitivity. The pleasure comes from the character of the playing, the rhythmic lift and the ease with which the musicians connect.
