Ready for Freddie captures Freddie Hubbard combining youthful fire with an increasingly assured musical vision. Recorded in 1961, the session places his brilliant trumpet alongside Wayne Shorter’s tenor saxophone and Bernard McKinney’s euphonium, whose mellow lower register gives the ensemble an unusually rich colour.
McCoy Tyner, Art Davis and Elvin Jones form a rhythm section capable of both driving the music forward and opening space within it. Tyner’s resonant chords and flowing lines complement Hubbard’s agile phrasing, while Davis and Jones bring a strong, flexible pulse. The sextet has considerable power, but its appeal also lies in the detail of the writing and the contrasts between the soloists.
“Arietis” sets the pace with energy and precision, while “Crisis” and “Birdlike” offer further opportunities for Hubbard’s invention. Shorter’s “Marie Antoinette” adds another compositional voice, and “Weaver of Dreams” provides a lyrical contrast. The programme reveals a trumpeter able to make technical command serve a broader range of expression.
Why this album deserves a place in your collection
This is a rewarding choice for anyone drawn to Blue Note’s early-1960s recordings, combining memorable compositions with a distinctive ensemble sound. Hubbard and Shorter are compelling partners, and the euphonium adds depth that sets the arrangements apart. For admirers of Tyner and Jones, their contribution offers another reason to return to a session full of character and momentum.
