Originally issued as Piano and subsequently known as Whisper Not, this 1958 session captures Wynton Kelly’s gift for making sophisticated playing sound effortless. His touch is clear and buoyant, his phrasing full of rhythmic life, and his feeling for the blues gives the music warmth without weighing it down.

Kenny Burrell’s guitar and Paul Chambers’s bass create an intimate setting around the piano, with Philly Joe Jones joining on selected performances. The contrast between the lighter trio textures and the added rhythmic presence of the drums gives the programme variety. Throughout, the musicians leave enough space for small accents, answering phrases and shifts of emphasis to register.

Benny Golson’s “Whisper Not” provides a particularly attractive theme, while “Action” and “Dark Eyes” show Kelly’s rhythmic assurance. “Ill Wind” and “Don’t Explain” reveal his sensitivity to a song’s melodic shape. Burrell’s warm sound complements the piano beautifully, and Chambers supplies a firm foundation with a melodic presence of his own.

Why this album deserves a place in your collection

This is an inviting choice for anyone who enjoys swinging piano and the conversational possibilities of a small group. It brings Kelly’s personality into focus as a leader, with the guitar adding a distinctive colour to the ensemble. Listeners familiar with his work alongside Miles Davis will find the same rhythmic sparkle here, given room to shape an entire programme.
