A trombone can bring both weight and tenderness to a small group, and Curtis Fuller makes the most of that range on The Opener. His rounded tone and fluid phrasing give the music an inviting warmth, with plenty of rhythmic bite when the pace quickens.
Recorded in 1957, Fuller’s first album as a leader for Blue Note features Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. The blend of trombone and tenor gives the ensemble a rich, mellow character, while the rhythm section keeps the music buoyant and responsive.
A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening reveals Fuller’s lyrical touch, while his own Hugore and Lizzy’s Bounce bring blues feeling and lively exchanges to the foreground. Oscar Pettiford’s Oscalypso adds a contrasting rhythmic flavour to a programme that balances familiar melodies with the leader’s compositions.
Why this album deserves a place in your collection
For the pleasure of hearing Fuller establish his voice as a Blue Note leader, supported by musicians whose personalities complement his own. Mobley’s relaxed phrasing and Timmons’s earthy piano are especially rewarding alongside the trombone. An engaging choice for listeners who enjoy the melodic warmth, blues roots and close interplay of late-1950s hard bop.
